Summer Adventures the Right Way

Summer Adventures the Right Way

Summer is finally here.  That means long days, warm nights, and endless opportunities to get outside. While summer is amazing, it’s also short.  Make the most of this summer with each outing being a success.  The summer challenges you want to prepare for are heat, sun exposure, dehydration, and changing weather conditions.

If you're planning to spend time outdoors this summer, here are ten essential tips to help you stay cool, comfortable, and ready for adventure.

Start Early to Beat the Heat

Summer temperatures can climb quickly, especially in exposed areas with little shade. One of the easiest ways to stay comfortable is to begin your adventure early in the morning. This is the inspiration for our Dawn Patrol collection.  Cooler temperatures make hiking and other activities more enjoyable, and you’ll often avoid afternoon heat and thunderstorms as well. Early starts also reward you with quieter trails, softer light, and more active wildlife.

Stay Hydrated Throughout the Day

Hydration is one of the most important parts of any summer outing. When temperatures rise, your body loses water faster through sweat, even if you don’t notice it happening. Carry more water than you think you’ll need and sip consistently throughout the day instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. Electrolyte mixes or sports drinks can also help replace minerals lost during long or strenuous activities.

Wear Lightweight, Breathable Clothing

The right clothing can make a huge difference in hot weather. Lightweight, moisture-wicking fabrics help move sweat away from your skin and allow airflow to keep you cooler. Light-colored clothing reflects sunlight better than darker colors, and loose-fitting layers can provide both ventilation and sun protection. As tempting as cotton may seem in summer, technical fabrics often dry faster and stay more comfortable during active adventures.

Protect Yourself from the Sun

Long hours in the sun can lead to sunburn, dehydration, and exhaustion before you even realize it. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are all essential summer gear. Apply sunscreen before heading out and reapply throughout the day, especially if you’re swimming or sweating heavily. Sun hoodies, neck gaiters, and lightweight long sleeves are also great options for protecting your skin while staying cool.

Bring More Snacks Than You Think You Need

Warm weather and physical activity burn more energy than most people expect. Salty snacks, fresh fruit, trail mix, and energy bars can help keep your energy levels steady throughout the day. Eating regularly also helps your body recover from heat and exertion more efficiently. Pro tip: Store snacks somewhere accessible so you can grab them easily during breaks.

Prepare for Afternoon Storms

Summer weather can change quickly, particularly in mountains and higher elevations. Clear skies in the morning can turn into thunderstorms by afternoon. Keep an eye on the forecast before you head out and pack a lightweight rain jacket just in case. If thunder starts rolling in, avoid exposed ridges, tall isolated trees, and open areas until the storm passes.

Keep Bugs from Ruining the Fun

Mosquitoes, flies, and ticks are part of summer adventure season, but a little preparation goes a long way. Insect repellent, lightweight long sleeves, and bug nets can make evenings at camp much more enjoyable. If you’re hiking through tall grass or wooded areas, do regular tick checks during and after your trip. Campsites near breezy areas or open water often have fewer bugs as well.

Cool Down Whenever You Can

One of the best parts of summer adventures is taking advantage of natural ways to cool off. Take breaks in the shade, soak your hat in cold water, or stop for a quick swim if conditions allow. Cooling your wrists, neck, and head can help lower your overall body temperature quickly. Listening to your body and slowing down when needed helps prevent overheating and exhaustion.

Wear the Right Footwear

Hot weather can still be tough on your feet. You want to find the right balance between support during your activity, weight, and possibly even a lightweight camp shoe or sandal. Breathable hiking shoes or trail runners help reduce sweat and discomfort during long days outside. You can always take your shoes and socks off at a break to let everything breathe and dry out.  Good traction remains important too, especially on loose gravel, dusty trails, or slick rocks near water.

Don’t Forget to Enjoy Summer Nights

One of the greatest rewards of summer adventures is spending time outside after the sun goes down. Warm evenings, star-filled skies, campfires, and late sunsets create moments you’ll remember long after the trip ends. Bring a lightweight layer for cooler nighttime temperatures, settle into camp, and take time to slow down and appreciate your surroundings.

Now that you're prepared with these summer adventuring tips, you're ready to make the most of the season outdoors. Whether you're heading out for a quick day hike, a weekend camping trip, or a longer backcountry journey, these tips will help keep you cool, comfortable, and ready for whatever summer brings your way.
